Mariners debut latest City Connect uniforms

Jun 20, 2023

The Mariners on Friday unveiled their Nike City Connect uniforms which feature a bold design and, coincidentally, capitalize on a recent viral sensation. In a nod to a former Mariners’ logo, their City Connect cap features a trident, aligning with the new 30-pound prop that the team's players began using in their dugout last week as part of a celebration after each home run. "Totally serendipitous," Mariners Senior Dir of Experiential Marketing Mandy Lincoln said the timing was "totally serendipitous." She told SBJ, "We’re super pumped. It's aligned very nicely, but nothing that we tried to craft ourselves." The Mariners are the third MLB club this season and 17th overall to take part in the City Connect program. They will debut the uniforms May 5 and continue to wear them every Friday home game this season. The new collection went on sale Friday at the Mariners’ team stores in downtown Seattle and at T-Mobile Park, where there will be a live DJ throughout the day. The team on May 6 will host an event on Pier 62 in partnership with Fanatics to celebrate the launch. It also will participate in the opening of boating season parade on the Montlake Cut with a City Connect-themed vessel featuring the team mascot and former MLBer Harold Reynolds.

RESPECTING LOCAL HISTORY: The Mariners began conceptualizing for their City Connect launch in early 2021 with a group of about 10 club staffers working on the project. "We knew that our team was in a good place and headed into a new era of Mariners baseball," Lincoln said, "but before we looked ahead, we also had to tip our cap to the 100-plus years of baseball in the Pacific Northwest that got us to this point. So we ended up with this spirit of future nostalgia, with the past presenting the future." Among the details featured on the uniform are a depiction of Mount Rainier within the patch on the jersey sleeve; late Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus’ famous phrase "My Oh My" written above the jock tag; and the phrase "Sodo Mojo" stitched inside the jersey collar as a nod to the Sodo neighborhood the Mariners have always called home. The boldest feature, Lincoln said, are the black pants, which pay homage to the primary color of the 1940's Seattle Steelheads, a former Negro leagues team.

A big day for the Buffalo Bills; Another big day for Rose Zhang; Jody Allen still not engaging on team sales and from intern to Big Ten COO.
