Hosting their first ever home stand in program history, Cal State Fullerton women's water polo team split Wednesday's home games against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and the Division II Biola University Eagles.
Following a win against the Varsity Blues, where the Titans won 10-4, they were defeated by the Eagles 11-7. The Titans now have a season record of 5-6.
In their match against Toronto, the Titans were led by freshman Gabrielle Zaretskiy who scored 4 goals. Following Zaretskiy was Titans captain Mia Solorzano, who contributed 3 goals.
Despite falling to an early 1-0 deficit, the Titans responded with a 6-0 scoring run that put them up 6-1 late in the second period.
Varsity Blues Hannah Levin attempted to cut the deficit in half, scoring back-to-back goals within 30 seconds of each other. However, the period ended with a last second insurance shot by Zaretskiy, giving CSUF the lead, 7-3, going into halftime.
Returning from the half, the Titans’ offensive momentum continued as freshman Mikka Von Scherr immediately scored the Titans’ 8th goal. The Varsity Blues would score one more goal before Solorzano scored her third goal on a penalty shot, resulting in a CSUF lead of 9-4, heading into the final period.
Zaretskiy scored the game's last goal in the fourth period with an assist from Von Scherr, securing the Titans’ win at 10-4.
In their match against the Eagles, the Titans started strong with a 2-1 lead in the first period, but Biola quickly turned the match around scoring 7 uninterrupted goals.
Zaretskiy then scored with a power shot in the back of the net, ending the first half at 8-3.
Coming out of the half, the Eagles scored three more goals, extending the lead to 11-3.
The Titans turned things around with 4 goals by Jacqueline Naito, Brittney Pino, Stephanie Hidalgo and Kylie Corwin in the last quarter, but it would not be enough to win.
Von Scherr said coming back from the second half, she and her teammates worked the ball more, passed and moved around more and took the extra steps head water polo coach Kyle Witt told them to do.
Despite the Eagles controlling most of the first half, the Titans returned strong entering the fourth quarter.
"I think we just had to adjust to play our style of game, and we didn't adjust until halftime," Witt said.
Once the Titans adjusted, it was a close game, said Witt. Though in the end, Biola took the win 11-7.
The Titans are headed to California Lutheran University this weekend to play at the Tina Finali Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Witt said they plan on working on their individual and team defense tomorrow, hoping they can improve and be ready for the weekend.
For their next home game, the Titans will host rivals Long Beach State on March 10 at 6 p.m. at the Titans Aquatics Center.
