Scotland rugby fans divided over 'eyesore' new national kit

Jul 25, 2023

SCOTLAND rugby fans can't decide on the new-look national team change strip - and are even confused by the COLOUR.

The alternate shirt, to be worn when the team can't don their traditional navy blue jerseys, was revealed by the Scottish Rugby Union on Wednesday - and received a decidedly mixed reaction from supporters ahead of the Autumn Internationals.

Replacing last term's teamwear - including a white top which followed some sky blue Macron gear in 2019-20 - is the latest shirt which has officially been branded as PURPLE - but many fans are convinced the new-look is PINK.

With Murrayfield matches against Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Fiji kicking off in a month's time the debate may soon be settled - but first impressions are definitely split.

"Love the pink and navy combination. Would love one without the sponsor," was among the first reactions to the new gear.

"Some people need to learn what pink is..." another Scotland fan replied, "This is clearly lilac/purple, like the heather that covers Scottish hills!"

"Thistle colour, very apt," said another.

"Don't know what you’re all moaning about," replied one follower viewing the shirt on Facebook, "I think it's a belter."

Others were not so enthusiastic, even branding the shirt "an eyesore" after it's social media reveal.

Among the critical comments was: "Oh no that's not the best colour."

One fan suggested it was the result of a laundry error: "Utterly honking. By all means go pink, but make it bright pink. This just looks like a white alternate shirt has been washed with a red sock by accident."

Branded with the sales tag 'For the Thistle', the SRU describe the kit as a "purple shirt with navy details on the collar and cuffs, outlines of thistle leaves embossed over the shoulders and the Scottish Rugby Crest embroidered over the heart."

It also features "Macron's latest technical fabric making it lightweight yet extremely durable" and includes reinforced stitching and GPS pouch.

The body-fit match kit retails for £100, with the adult replica selling for £64.
